Goddess Brigid

Model Talia Arone with her daughter Nova. Brigid is the Goddess of hearth, home, childbirth, poetry and artists. She had 19 priestesses who would take turns lighting a fire at Kildare each night starting on Imbolc. On the twentieth night, Brigid herself would ignite the embers, which would burst into a flames. Across Europe families put candles in their window to welcome her into their homes. In their hearths they would light a fire in her name, and in the morning look for the ashes of a goat hoof print to indicate that luck and fertility would be theirs in the coming Spring. In the middle ages, midwives would whisper to St. Brigid, who wandered through the streets, to come into the house and birthing room to assist women actively engaged in childbirth.

Shimmying tails catch the aurora borealis
Of an Afro-funk underwater light show,
Body waving mermaids in sequins
Scale purple rock formations,
Like candy-colored dome cathedrals from Mars

Busting out of cylindrical bell towers
Jellyfish undulate in every direction,
Squid propel themselves in schools
Like synchronized jet pilots,
Their tentacles making tracers like contrails

Electric eels pop like B girls
To the tribal fusion of Neptune’s paradise,
Origami seahorses pixelate
In the perpetual motion of iridescent kelp beds,
Their heads nodding yes to horned Narwhal in the west

An army of Scorpionfish flip flop
And hip drop
To the emanating sounds of granite rock,
Pink corals groove to the watery vibrations
Of the mineral nation

Pele flows like red blood
From the moon-crater lips
Of the island peaks,
Her tresses are blackened Iliahi trees,
The bleached corals
Are fossilized milk
From her watery breasts
Giving life to the animals at sea.

Her fiery blood courses
Into the frothy waves,
A marriage of fire and water
Is celebrated by the honks
And drumming groans of the Nene goose,
She purges dormant emotions
Hidden like crabs underneath buried rocks.

A wild orchestra of rain releases pain
In droplets like musical notes from heaven,
Tapping on faces that open
Like fragrant lokelanis,
Pele cools under the beaming stars
With the breeze whistling
Through the ironwoods and banyan trees,
With sky chairs creaking in trade winds.

Spring Equinox Wedding

Eight years ago my beloved husband Raven and I got married. My mom was there to take some photos of the eventful day.

I love my man. He's most definitely had a goddess catharsis. Raven's a wonderful husband and father, plus he's my best friend.
